Description

The Elkhart Plastics 50 Gallon Flat Bottom Utility Storage Tank 1.7 SG (MPN 107049A03) is a rotomolded, flat bottom polyethylene utility tank for storing and hauling water and non-flammable liquids, including sprayer use in lawn care, recreation and agriculture. It is rated for 1.7 specific gravity (14.2 lb/gal). The tank measures 38" long, 19" wide and 22.375" tall, weighs 31 lb and is molded in natural, a translucent finish with molded-in gallon and liter markings so you can see the liquid level.

The flat bottom sits securely in truck beds and trailers, and the ribbed body makes it easy to strap down. It has a large 6" fill cap with a built-in vent, a 2" NPS port and a Santoprene lid gasket, plus a 3/4" NPT outlet/drain with an EPDM gasket and molded-in hand holds. UV inhibitors protect it for indoor and outdoor use. Made in the USA by Elkhart Plastics, a Myers Industries company.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it made of?
The tank is molded from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The lid gasket is Santoprene and the fitting gasket is EPDM.

What specific gravity is it rated for?
It is rated for 1.7 specific gravity (14.2 lb/gal). Water is 1.0 specific gravity (8.3 lb/gal).

What are the dimensions?
It measures 38" long, 19" wide and 22.375" tall and weighs 31 lb.

What can I use it for?
Storing and hauling water and non-flammable liquids, including as a sprayer tank for lawn care, recreation and agriculture. The flat bottom fits truck beds and trailers. Liquids cannot exceed 1.7 specific gravity.

What temperature can it handle?
Elkhart Plastics rates its tanks for intermittent temperatures up to 140°F (60°C) and sustained temperatures up to 120°F (49°C). Service temperatures above that lower the tank's specific gravity rating. Deionized water can be stored at up to 100°F (38°C).

Can it be buried or pressurized?
No. Elkhart Plastics liquid tanks are not engineered for burial and cannot be pressurized or put under vacuum. The fill cap has a built-in vent.

Can it store gasoline or fuel?
No. Elkhart Plastics states that its polyethylene tanks should not be used for gasoline storage.

How do I install the fittings and plumbing?
Tighten bulkhead fitting nuts hand-tight plus a half turn. Over-tightening can crack poly fittings, and a damaged fitting should always be replaced. If you use thread sealant, make sure it is compatible with both the fittings and the stored liquid. Avoid rigid plumbing connections, because temperature changes and filling and emptying put stress on the fittings. Support hoses, pipe runs, valves and filters with their own hangers so their weight does not hang on the fittings.

What should I do before the first fill?
Fill the tank with water and test the tank, fittings and installation at full capacity for at least 4 hours before storing your liquid. Never fill or empty the tank without adequate venting, and keep vents clear of ice and snow. The warranty does not cover lost liquid.

Will freezing temperatures hurt it?
Polyethylene is not affected by freezing temperatures, but if the stored liquid can freeze, leave room for expansion. Protect the tank walls from impact, especially below 40°F (4°C), and take extra care when moving it in cold weather, when the risk of cracking is greater.

What should I check when it is delivered?
Inspect the tank for defects or shipping damage as soon as it arrives, and note any damage or discrepancy on both the driver's bill of lading and the packing list. Damaged-product claims must be made within 30 days. When unloading, keep lift forks, loader buckets and sharp objects away from the tank wall, never let the tank roll over on its fittings, unload onto level ground clear of rocks, and do not unload in high winds. Large bulk tanks should be unloaded with a crane or another suitable lifting device.

Is it UV-stabilized, and what is its fire rating?
Elkhart Plastics molds its tanks from polyethylene compounded with UV light stabilizers. Its standard UV rating is 15, meaning the tank keeps about 50% of its UV protection after 15,000 hours of sun exposure; the rating can vary by product, so contact us to confirm it for this model. Elkhart's polyethylene carries a UL94 HB flammability rating.

Can I paint or repair it?
Elkhart Plastics does not recommend painting its tanks. Paint, even with an adhesion promoter, eventually peels because polyethylene expands and contracts with temperature. A damaged polyethylene tank can be repaired by plastic welding, done by qualified personnel.

How long does it take to ship, and where does it ship from?
Lead time is 3-4 weeks, depending on inventory and volume. It ships from Atlantic, IA.

Who makes it?
Elkhart Plastics, a Myers Industries company. Manufacturer part number 107049A03.

Elkhart does not state a separate term for this utility tank. Warranty claims must be made in writing within 14 days of discovering the problem. The warranty does not cover issues caused by improper installation or use, liquids above the tank's specific gravity rating, a base that does not fully support the tank or has rocks or roots, moving the tank from its original installation, freezing, storms or other natural events, or staining and discoloration.
